Monterey student struck by car Friday morning

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A 15-year-old Monterey student was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a car early Friday morning.

A group of Monterey students were attempting to cross 50th Street when the individual was struck by the car.

Captain Roy Bassett, with the Lubbock  Police Department, was one of the first officers that responded to the scene around 8:15 a.m.

"Unfortunately, what students will often do is cross halfway and then wait in the median. And then, kids being kids, a lot of times think they're faster than they are," said Bassett.

Police say the student was not using a crosswalk to cross the street.

The accident is currently under investigation.

Officials say the student is in satisfactory condition.
