Orleans Parish Deputy dies in morning car crash

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - An Orleans Parish Deputy died this morning in a car crash after losing control of his vehicle.

Deputy Brunell A. Magee was driving eastbound on I-10 near Irish Bayou when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the median and collided with a Nissan Juke going in the opposite direction.

The Juke was driven by a 61-year-old man who is in stable condition at the hospital, but Magee died after being transported by EMS to University Hospital.

"We regret this tragic loss of one of our own," Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Magee's fiancée and the entire Magee family. On behalf of the Sheriff's Office, I also want to express our concern for the other driver in this incident. We hope he makes a full recovery."

Deputy Magee joined the Sheriff's Office in 2010. He was 35.

Blood and alcohol tests are being conducted and the Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
