This weekend marked the start of the 2014 season for people wanting to visit Ship Island. 79 scouts from troop 4004 gathered together as they were instructed on what they would be doing on the island Sunday.
Bringing the group out for a day of fun in the sun is priority number one, but Scout Master Lori Burchfield said there's more than that on the agenda.
"We're going to visit Fort Massachusetts. We're going to be teamed up with IMMS and their staff, and we're actually going to be shifting and also tossing out some nets to see what we can find," Burchfield said.
Kameron Chow, from troop 23, came on the adventure with his friend from troop 4004. He has heard a lot about Ship Island and is excited to see it for himself.
"I heard there's a lot of cool stuff out there; shells, shark teeth. I just want to come have fun and spend some time with some of my buds," Kameron said.
Jaden Peterson is also from troop 23 and said he knows nothing about Ship Island, but he looks forward to seeing what he's been learning about with his group in real life.
"I don't know about sea animals, and I'm hoping to learn a lot about them. I'm hoping I can learn about the things we're talking about in Hase Cooper, and anemones, and I just want to see it in person for real instead of looking at it in books," Jaden said.
The spring schedule for Ship Island runs until May 9, with departure times of 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Tickets are now available online at http://www.msshipisland.com/.
