A Houston County facility that has sat idle for nearly three years is being brought back to life.
According to facility managers, the Davy Crockett Regional Juvenile Facility is set to accept its first 16 teens on April 1.
The city of Crockett and Houston County have partnered with Conerstone Programs to transform the old Crockett State School to a new juvenile treatment facility.
"When you have that buy in from the community it makes it a lot easier to reach our kids," said Tyrene Green, Program Manager, Conerstone Programs.
Program Manager Tyrene Green says Conerstone Programs works with at risk youth and will offer social and correctional services tailored to community needs.
"We offer them anger regressive therapy, sex offender therapy, drug and alcohol for the most part," said Green.
Executive director of Crockett Economic Development Tom Lambert says the facility is set to open on April 1st and there is plenty of work to be done.
"We're working diligently right now to bring it back into shape it's been vacant a long time and it needs a lot of paint-up, clean-up and fix-up," said Lambert.
Lambert says the treatment facility will create 35 to 40 primary jobs that will eventually grow into 100 jobs.
"From kitchen work to teachers, physiologists, medical staff," said Lambert.
State Representative Trent Ashby attended the official announcement this evening and calls the new partnership a monumental benefit for all of East Texas.
"This success doesn't just happened, to me this should be held up as a model of how a collaboration between local, state and private industry should work together to create jobs," said Ashby.
A model they hope will be a recipe for success.
Officials say the job openings are already on the Texas Workforce website.
On February 11th the Texas Workforce Commission hosted a job fair at the Crockett Civic Center. The facility has hired all but a handful of workers from the Houston County area.
"What you normally find in smaller communities is a committed workforce," Conerstone Manager Jeff Pearson said. "If you do proper hiring and proper training you get people that will stay with you, and in this type of business, if you have tenured employees that want to work with kids, that is extremely important."
