LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

An ordinary night took a deadly turn Thursday as an overnight fire ripped through a South Lubbock home.

Thick smoke billowed through the air around 12:40 a.m. as a home in the 8600 block of Jordan Drive burned to ashes.

It took eight fire units more than two hours to fight the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring homes.

Officials say they discovered the body of an adult inside of the home after the fire was put out.

Close friends and neighbors tell us the man who lives in the house is Steven Salazar, 34. The Chief Medical Examiner for Lubbock County confirmed Salazar's identity on Friday.

Moments before firefighters arrived, Eric Cox was outside his home nearby.

"It was real quiet...early, early morning. I could see the flames, the light from the flames from the backyard there, dancing pretty erratically," Cox said.

Cox said he ran over to try and help but the fire was so fierce he couldn't get in.

"There was no way, that fire was all the way through the house...door was red hot," Cox said.

The fire marshal's office is still working to find out what exactly caused the fire.

The house is a complete loss.

"Wish I could have been out there a little sooner and maybe react a little faster, maybe got there a little faster, maybe somebody would be alive today," Cox said.
