The Lubbock Heritage Society is asking for community support to help them "save the Godbold."
The group says the Godbold Center, formerly the Plains Clinic and the original St. Mary's Hospital, is in the process of being sold.
The prospective new owner is considering tearing the structure down and replacing it with a high-rise hotel.
The Lubbock Heritage Society released this statement in a recent news release concerning the Godbold Center:
"The Lubbock Heritage Society is very concerned about the destruction of yet another historic structure in Lubbock. We are holding a press conference to express that concern. One by one, we have lost buildings with historic significance, and we must make every effort to save what we have left. The doctors who practiced in the Plains Clinic and the nuns who served in the St. Mary's Hospital were among the most dedicated individuals to ever serve our area. Multitudes of births and deaths and, undoubtedly, lots of miracles, have occurred in that building, perhaps even to a member of our own families. Please – let's make sure this building remains for generations to come."
The society will be holding a press conference on Tuesday, Mar. 25, at 1:30 p.m. at Cafe J, located at 2606 19th Street, in support of the Save the Godbold campaign.
