(RNN) - As part of a social experiment, a Canadian radio station torched $5,000 after its listeners told them to.

Listeners of 90.3 AMP Radio in Calgary, Canada had the option to vote to burn or bank the money. And of course, they voted to burn it.

The crazy part is that if they had voted to bank it, the money would have gone to one of the voters, decided by a random drawing.

On March 18 the station began the contest, posting to Facebook that they were testing "the ultimate social experiment." Listeners were asked to text with a vote of #burn or #bank, and the hosts, radio personalities Ryan and Katie, promised to carry out whatever users decided.

A pet crematorium, Pet Heaven Crematorium and Funeral Chapel, even called in to offer their services to make sure the money was safely burned if the votes turned out that way.

Lo and behold, by the time the contest was over, a slim majority had edged out; 54 percent of voters decided to destroy the money, much to the sadness and disbelief of Ryan and Katie.

"I mean that's half a year of mortgage payments right there," Katie said, as they gestured to the money laid out on a table.

The station filmed the money's fiery demise to the tune of Ellie Goulding's Burn – but they could have picked a better choice, like The Trammps' Disco Inferno. The low-key yet energetic tones of Goulding's song don't quite capture the pain and agony of burning a big wad of cash.

But true to their word, the money was incinerated in Pet Heaven's crematorium and handed over to Ryan and Katie in a tiny little urn once everything was said and done.

"So, in the very first edition of Bank it or Burn it in Calgary, Calgary voted to burn $5,000," Ryan said.

Now, 90.3 AMP Radio is at it again. They originally started the experiment with $15,000, and now that $10,000 is left they're letting it go all at once.

This time it looks like voters are much wiser. Since yesterday, more than 1,000 votes have flooded into their Facebook post with most people voting to "#bank" it. But it's unclear who will win – the bankers who want to line their pockets, or the burners who want to watch everyone's chance go up in flames.
