A Lubbock non-profit organization has hit a small snag in their efforts to give prom attire to local teenagers who might, otherwise, not be able to afford it.
Project Prom is organized by The Bridge of Lubbock. They collect new and gently used prom dresses and tuxedos and give them to teens.
The first giveaway is on Saturday and, so far, they've collected more than 1,000 dresses but Ashlei Watson, with the Bridge of Lubbock, says they have only collected about 5 full tuxedos.
"We want to have everything available and we just don't have it right now and the first giveaway is on Saturday," Watson said.
Organizers are asking residents in the community to donate money to help sponsor tuxedo rentals for teenage boys.
They have worked out a deal with Tuxedo Junction where, for $50, the store will supply a teenager with a tuxedo and shoe rental of their choice.
Watson says their goal is to make sure the boys have the same kind of experience as the ladies.
"We want the boys to be able to experience the same thing. It's so important that they feel loved and welcomed as well. We want the boys to step out and make it a memorable day for them, too," Watson said
In the meantime, organizers are gearing up for Project Prom's first giveaway, which is this Saturday, Mar. 29, at the Bridge of Lubbock.
When it comes to prom dresses, the organization has collected hundreds.
"Some of these dresses are brand new, some are gently used. We have them by color, by size, it's very organized by our volunteers," Watson said.
If your teenager would like to pick out a dress or tuxedo, the Project Prom Giveaway is taking place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1301 Redbud Avenue.
If your teenager can't make it this Saturday, there will be another giveaway date in April.
Teens can also make an appointment by calling 806-687-0772.
You can also call that number for more information on how to donate money for tuxedos.
