(RNN) - A Snickers ad might have made a few people snicker, but divided online reaction painted it as offensive and possibly sexist to both genders.
The 1:11 spot released Tuesday in Australia shows construction workers yelling complimentary things at women walking down the street, much to the surprise of the passersby.
"I appreciate your appearance is just one aspect of who you are!" one of the guys says.
The kicker is guys in construction don't act like themselves when they're hungry. Otherwise, complimentary remarks about the color of blouses would have been replaced with catcalls.
The ad has been viewed more than 1.2 million times on YouTube, and there are a considerable number of comments on the video and on Snickers' Facebook page.
Men and women expressed thoughts ranging from amusement at the turn on a common stereotype to promises of boycotts against the candy company.
"This is pretty epic," commenter Zachary Detton wrote.
On the other hand, Bryan Conn thought the minds behind it had "missed their chance."
"They could have easily made the reason men normally act vile is simply because we're hungry," he wrote. "Here, eat a Snickers, no more hungry, sexist men. They almost had it."
Twitter users also had a lot to say about the ad.
"Note to self: If women want to be treated well, men should not eat," @Cindy_Ritchie tweeted.
