Smoldering Cotton in East Lubbock

Bales of cotton are still smoldering nearly ten hours after a fire started.

It started around eight Tuesday morning at the Goetz and Sons Incorporated building, at 701 E 42nd. Street. In a warehouse that stores bales of cotton. The fire was deep inside the building, and firefighters had to move cotton just to get to the fire. In all, it took firefighters several hours to gain control of the situation.

"A unit showed up on the scene and found heavy smoke conditions. Once they got inside, they saw the need for calling a second alarm on this fire," said Royce Ethridge, LFD Training Chief.

No one was hurt in the fire, and only one sixth of the cotton inside the building was damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
