LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

On Friday, a Lubbock County Jury sentenced Juan Gilberto Mora, 33 to life in prison. The same jury found Mora guilty of Aggravated Assault on Thursday.

Mora stabbed Elizabeth Garcia on Sunday, Apr. 6, 2014, at the Toledo Court Apartments in the 300 block of Toledo Avenue.

Police say they found Garcia in her apartment with multiple stab wounds to her torso and head. She was taken to UMC with life-threatening injuries. Mora survived, but her family says she's needed extensive rehabilitation.

A witness told us that she ran into Garcia's apartment after she heard screams.

She says could hear people near the victim's unit telling them the woman had a screwdriver in her head. The witness heard a woman yelling from inside the apartment and ran inside to help. She saw the victim's children on the couch, crying.

In the 911 call, the caller said she thought Garcia was dead.

"She's got something stuck in her head and she's bleeding," the caller said.

Mora fled the scene before police arrived. K-9 units and the DPS helicopter were called out to assist in the search.
