Worker killed in Park Tower transformer room

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A worker has been killed in an industrial accident at the Park Tower Apartments at 1617 27th Street.

Authorities say Jose Aguirre died while working in the transformer room on the 9th floor. They say he came in contact with the transformer and was electrocuted.

Fire and EMS personnel responded and attempted to revive Aguirre while extracting him from the 9th floor, eventually transporting him to UMC where he was pronounced deceased.

Park Tower owner Carter Stanley says Aguirre was a part time employee and had been a resident for four months.

Stanley says while working helping pull signal cables for a security system, Aguirre went into a transformer closet, against his orders.

Aguirre was electrocuted by the 240 volt transformer, which carries more than 100 volts over a typical home transformer.

Stanley responded to calls for help and tried to resuscitate Aguirre before first responders rushed him to UMC.

Stanley said the staff is grieving over Aguirre's loss.

The Lubbock Fire Marshal's investigation is in progress.
