Friend speaks out about Fitzgerald murder victim

FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -

The search for a killer in Fitzgerald continues tonight. A young woman was stabbed 14 times inside a motel room over the weekend.

30-year-old Samantha Wheeles was found on the floor of the motel room Sunday morning.

Police believe she was killed late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Samantha Wheeles and Eugene Glass knew each other for about ten years.

"Its devastating to find out a friend was killed, but its better to know she's in a better place today," said Eugene Glass.

Glass says Wheeles was a good friend.

"Whenever I talked to her she was opened and friendly and just a very sweet young lady," he recalled.

Uptown Motel workers found Wheeles' body Sunday morning. She had been brutally attacked and killed.

"There were several people that were staying at the motel people on both sides of her apartment, and they had not heard anything suspicious at all," said Chief William Smallwood.

Police say the stab wound that killed her was to the neck. They've not found the murder weapon and they're hoping someone will come forward with information.

"Anybody that might have some information that they might not think is useful but it could be useful to us, please give us a call," said Smallwood.

Police plan to review surveillance footage from nearby businesses in hopes they can spot the killer.
