Texas Tech sophomore first baseman Eric Gutierrez (Mission, Texas) led the Red Raiders to a 4-0 record last week, including a series sweep over K-State, and today he was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.

Gutierrez is the first Red Raider to earn the honor since 2011, when three Red Raiders were recognized. Gutierrez' selection marks the 26th time a Red Raider has been named player of the week and just the fifth selection over the last five years.

Also receiving top honors from the Big 12 are Texas right-handed pitcher Nathan Thornhill (Pitcher of the Week) and Baylor catcher Matt Menard and TCU right-handed pitcher Jordan Kipper (Newcomers of the Week).

Gutierrez led Tech last week, which included its first Big 12 series sweep since 2011, batting .533 (8-for-15) with five runs, three doubles, a home run, seven RBI, .933 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage.

He batted .455 (5-for-11) in a three-game series sweep over K-State while hitting safely in all four games last week.

Gutierrez started the week going 3-for-4 with four runs and four RBI with a home run against Abilene Christian.

He started the K-State series going 2-for-4 with a double during a 4-3 Friday-night victory. He doubled and drove in a run during Tech's game-two 7-4 win over K-State. He finished the weekend going 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI during an 11-7 win.

Gutierrez is among team leaders in several offensive categories, including batting .350 with 33 runs, 10 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 33 RBI with a .466 on-base percentage and .579 slugging percentage.

Gutierrez and the Red Raiders will be back in action at home on Tuesday, Apr. 15 hosting Dallas Baptist for a midweek contest at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
