The freezing temperatures sent one area vineyard owner scrambling into action.
Steve Newsom, owner of Amanecer Vineyard in Sundown, used a unique strategy to save his grape crop from freezing.
He took leftover hay from a previous crop he had grown and, with the help of family, friends and employees, distributed it in and around the perimeter of his vineyard.
The hay was then burned and a helicopter from Canadian circulated the heat layer in the air to keep the blooms from freezing.
Thanks to a community-wide effort, Newsom says he thinks his plan was effective.
He says it is important he protected his grapes not only for his family, but for the South Plains as well.
"We want to create an environment with our customers that they know that we're going to do what it takes within our power to deliver fruit every year," said Newsom.
Newsom says his family has been farming on the High Plains for 25 years and that he began growing grapes about three years ago.
He provides multiple types of grapes to wineries all across Texas.
