LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

It has happened more than 50 times, a Texas Tech Masked Rider handing the reins over to his or her successor.

On Friday afternoon, Mackenzie White was announced as Texas Tech's 53rd Masked Rider.

The announcement was made at the annual transfer of reins ceremony at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center.

"My first visit to Texas Tech, I got to be on the field to see the Masked Rider. After that I couldn't go anywhere else. Texas Tech was home for me and the Masked Rider was a dream I had to achieve," White said.

Being the Masked Rider is rewarding, but it's a lot of work.

Tech says the horse, rider and assistants travel more than 15,000 miles a year for football games and hundreds of other events.
