A former chief financial officer at Wayland Baptist University will spend the next five years in prison.

68-year-old James Smith pleaded guilty on Thursday to stealing $1.3 million from the school over a four-year period.

Smith was fired last April after working for the university for 12 years.

In addition to his five-year sentence, a judge has ordered Smith to repay the stolen money.
