Fatal accident reminds us of motorcycle safety

Dwight Bethany and Jackson Police Spokeswoman Colendula Green are part of a big group of bikers who took part in a memorial ride Friday morning for Dreyfus Cagins. The 35-year-old was killed on Easter Sunday on Highway 49 in Richland. His motorcycle collided with an 18-wheeler.

"He was like a big brother to us. We want to make sure this last ride is focused on him and his family," Officer Green says.

The death reminds us that it's crucial for any motorcyclist to take a certified driving course before hitting the road.

"Vehicles on the road have to be prepared to see, look for motorcycles," says certified motorcycle instructor Robert Walton, President of Mississippi MotoSteps. It's a non-profit that provides certified motorcycle training courses three times a month. They partner with the Department of Public Safety.

Walton says the most basic of safety steps are often overlooked.

"Being able to stop, brake properly. Able to take off right when the light changes so you don't get stuck at the light," he says. "Make sure you know how to take a curve properly. People see a lot of things on TV and think that's how to do it, but that's not the way to do it."

He says it's important to stay at least four seconds behind the vehicle in front of you.

"And while riding with that four seconds of space, keep your eyes at least ten seconds ahead of you. See what the other cars in front of you are doing so if that car brakes up there, after a while it's gonna be to you.

He also says friends should not learn from friends, they should learn from certified instructors.
