LUBBOCK, Texas (April 26, 2014) – Hunter McFall had a trio of hits and closed the series with eight hits, as No.8 Lubbock Christian University completed a non-conference series sweep with a 6-4 win over Southern Nazarene University Saturday afternoon at Hays Field.
SNU had the opening lead in all three games of the series, and they took the first lead Saturday off a two-run single by Chance San Miguel in the first inning. LCU erased the 2-0 deficit with a four-run bottom of the first inning.
Tanner Rainey led off with a double and Jesse Pintado walked to set-up a two-run triple by Brandon Wilson to tie the game at 2-2. The triple was the second by Wilson this season and the third of his career. McFall gave LCU the lead with a single to score Wilson and Wade Stramp followed with an RBI-ground out for a 4-2 lead.
A Crimson Storm error led to a 5-2 lead in the second inning and the score would go unchanged until the seventh inning. Ryan Brosnan hit a double to left centerfield to score Ryan O'Donnell and the Chaps lead was cut to 5-3. LCU grabbed an insurance run in the eighth inning, as Brett Wilhelm hit a single through a drawn-in infield for a 6-3 lead. Brosnan struck again in the top of the ninth inning with a RBI-single to cut LCU's lead to 6-4, and it brought the tying run to the plate. LCU pitcher Jack Mabe claimed the victory (4-1) and completed his second complete game by forcing Caleb Teel into grounding out for the final out.
Mabe allowed four runs (three earned) off seven hits in nine innings of work. More importantly, with the wind constantly blowing out 20 MPH throughout the game, he was able to force SNU into 18 ground outs. Thomas Schellhardt suffered the loss (5-8) for SNU, allowing five runs (four earned) off nine hits in six innings.
McFall finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI, and finished the series 8-for-12 with 7 RBI. Wilson went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple with two RBI. LCU had 14 hits in the game, but stranded 14 runners
The game marked the 19th consecutive game in which the Chaps have scored at least five runs in a game. Their fifth consecutive win places their overall record at 36-10 on the season. SNU fell to 16-32. The game was LCU's final non-conference game and they finish 13-6 in non-conference action. LCU closes out their season with a three-game Heartland Conference series against Texas – Permian Basin beginning with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hays Field.
