Texas Tech tennis to find out postseason fate

Provided by Texas Tech University

Texas Tech will find out its postseason fate on Tuesday at 4 p.m., as the NCAA will announce the 2014 entrants in the NCAA Tennis Championships via a live broadcast on NCAA.com.

The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders are hosting an NCAA Selection Show Watching Party at 4 p.m. at the Texas Tech Club at Jones AT&T Stadium on Tuesday. The show, which will be aired on NCAA.com, will be streamed throughout the Texas Tech Club.

Texas Tech fans are invited to join the team at the Texas Tech Club for the announcement. The NCAA Men's Selection Show airs at 4 p.m., while the NCAA Women's Selection Show is slated for 4:30 p.m.

The No. 30 Lady Raiders (17-8), who have seemingly wrapped up their third straight appearance in the NCAA Championships, are expected to land a No. 2 seed after upsetting No. 18 Oklahoma at the Big 12 Championships on Friday. The Lady Raiders are 10-8 against ranked teams this season.

Lynn Kiro (28-6), Nikki Sanders (26-10) and Samantha Adams (22-11) have each won 20 matches this season to pace Texas Tech. Kiro is currently riding a 15-match winning streak, which is tied with Sanders for the longest in program history. Sanders did it during the 2011-12 season.

The No. 35 Red Raiders (13-10) look to return to the NCAA Championships after a one-year hiatus. If Texas Tech is selected on Tuesday, it would mark the eighth time in the last 10 years that Texas Tech has advanced to the NCAA Championships and the 13th time in program history.

The Red Raiders fell in the first round of the Big 12 Championships to No. 30 Oklahoma State, 4-3, on Friday. Over the last five seasons, no team inside the Top 42 nationally in men's tennis has failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The Red Raiders are led by sophomores Felipe Soares (22-10) and Hugo Dojas (19-12). In fact, Texas Tech is the youngest team ranked in the ITA Top 75, as the Red Raiders' starting lineup features one junior two sophomores and three freshmen. Soares is ranked No. 64, while Dojas is No. 99 in the most recent ITA Men's Singles Rankings.

With the selection show set for Tuesday, the updated team and player rankings will be released on Thursday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In between, the NCAA will announce the players selected for the NCAA Individual Singles and Doubles Championships.

Soares is on the bubble to land a spot in the 64-man field. With his most recent win over Oklahoma State's No. 70 Jakob Sude, Soares could jump into the Top 58 players. Soares is 7-8 this season against ITA Top 125 players. Over the last six years, every play inside the Top 58 in the ITA Men's Singles rankings have earned a spot in the NCAA Individual Championships.

So, now the waiting begins.
