ASHDOWN, AR (KSLA) -

Members of an local organization dedicated to reducing the stray and feral cat population say a blinded kitten found abandoned in the middle of an Ashdown street over the weekend was abused, and now they are demanding justice.

"They should have at least gave her to somebody that could take her to the vet and take care of her," says Kendra Fielding, who says she rescued the small kitten after someone dumped it on Ashdown Street over the weekend. "It breaks my heart to know somebody dropped her off the way they did."

Kendra says the kitten had been abused and is now blind and in need of constant care. "Seeing if we can save her. I don't want to put her down right now, because she is so full of life," Fielding says.

She's named the kitten "Precious," and says 2 people were reportedly in the car that left her behind in the 300 block of South Third St.on Saturday. "That is called animal abandonment, which is animal cruelty."

Jan Price, with the Stray Cat Alliance of Texarkana, says the organization is dedicated to reducing the feral cat population in Bowie, Miller and Little River counties, through "trap, neuter and return" programs.  But they also use their network to offer alternatives to abandonment and abuse. "We have foster homes, foster parents to take them in, and we also have neonatal foster parents for the ones that need to be bottle-fed."

Price says that, while an Ashdown veterinarian has said it's not likely Precious' eyesight will be saved, he is hopeful the kitten will live.

Those who wish to help with the cost of veterinary care for Precious or to learn more about the Stray Cat Alliance of Texarkana, call (870) 330-4125. You can also visit them on their Facebook page.

Members of the organization are also hoping Ashdown police will follow up and track down those responsible for abandoning the tiny animal. There are reports of witnesses to the incident, but so far, Ashdown police have not confirmed to KSLA News 12 whether they are pursuing an investigation.
