I am glad to see Lubbock law enforcement continuing to crack down on illegal gambling operations.
These places have long operated in Lubbock under the guise of legal "game rooms," giving out prizes for slot machine-type jackpots.
What's really going on is far worse than just illegal cash for prizes. They are magnets for bigger crimes like drugs and prostitution. They are hard to keep up with and they are hard to stop. Cops shut one down, another one pops up.
The effect even trickles down to hurt nonprofits who benefit from legitimate bingo halls.
It's no secret that illegal game rooms are bad for our community. I thank and encourage the police and the D.A. to continue the fight.
I also call upon elected officials, both state and local, to look at laws regulating how they operate. They should have to put up signs, uncover their windows, turn on the lights, and allow unrestricted access to police.
Call it the price of doing business. After all, if they are legit, they should have nothing to hide.
