Coronado Softball looks to buck the norm

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The ninth-ranked Coronado High School softball team breezed through the Area round of the UIL playoffs, beating Weatherford 11-0 and 6-0 in a two-game sweep.

Early round playoff success is nothing new to Coronado as they have made the Regional Semi-finals six out of the last 14 years.

The program has never been able to get past that round though, and the players say this is the year that needs to change.

"This group of seniors that we have, you can tell how bad we want it," Senior Pitcher Monique Garcia said, "We're going to do whatever it takes to get there and beat whatever opponent we have. We are trying to get past the short goals, which is round by round, and not focus so much on state."

Expectations are exceptionally high for Coronado this year, which recently won it's 19th-consecutive district title, but the coaching staff says this team wants to prove this is one of the best softball programs in Texas.

"We go deep in the playoffs ever year, we go three or four rounds and yet we are still kind of off Lubbock's radar just because that's natural for Coronado softball. We're supposed to be here," Former player and Assistant Coach Nancy Sawyers said.

"So, for us to make that deep of a run all the way to state would be awesome, and yet I think it would be good for the girls as far as getting to that point and building that confidence that maybe they have lacked in years past."

The Lady Mustangs will head to Wichita Falls this weekend for a series with the Keller High School in the Regional Quarterfinals.

With a series win Coronado will have a chance once again to take this program further than it's ever been in the UIL playoffs.
