Peculiar elementary boy hit by car outside school

PECULIAR, MO (KCTV) -

A child stuck outside a Peculiar elementary school on Wednesday evening is in Children's Mercy Hospital in critical condition.

The accident occurred when a 6-year-old boy was riding his bike near the school. A source close to the family told KCTV5 News the boy darted out into traffic in front of a car that couldn't stop. The accident occurred just before 5:30 p.m.

"I was more or less worried it was going to be too late before anyone got there, that the kid was going to be gone. It would have been on my mind for the rest of my life that I couldn't do anything," said witness Brandon Stewart.

Stewart said the driver never saw the child.

"He was an honest guy. He didn't see the kid. I could tell. He was just devastated that he had just done that. He kept saying, 'Why did this happen to me?'" Stewart shared.

Peculiar police officers responded to a 911 call in the area of South Street and East Third Street. Upon arrival, officers determined the child had been struck by a vehicle and called the West Peculiar Fire Protection District. Police officers and trained by-standers rendered aid to the child while calling for a helicopter.

West Peculiar Fire Engine No. 1 and Med No. 2 arrived and began advanced life support. The child was transported by Life Flight Eagle to a local hospital.

He is reported to be in critical, but stable, condition.

The accident is being investigated by the Peculiar Police Department.

The West Peculiar Fire Protection District, Peculiar Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Cass County Sheriff's Department all responded to the accident.
