Suspected highway shooter now faces 20 felony counts

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Mohammed P. Whitaker, 27, now faces two additional felony counts in connection with firing guns at motorists on roadways in the metro area, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Friday.

A grand jury indictment released Friday includes the two counts which involve shots fired on March 18 at a vehicle in Blue Springs on Interstate 70 near Highway 7. The two new counts are the Class A felony of unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.

Whitaker, who had been under surveillance by police for about a week before his arrest, was previously charged with two counts of shooting into a motor vehicle and injuring a person, seven counts of shooting into a motor vehicle and nine counts of armed criminal action.

He appeared in a Jackson County court room in an orange jumpsuit with his hands shackled for his first court appearance on April 21. He told the judge he could not afford an attorney, so he will be appointed a public defender.

Whitaker was arrested at a Grandview home near Interstate 49, one of the highways that intersects at the Three Trails Crossing, the location where many of the shootings were reported.

In total, Whitaker now faces 20 felony counts. Eighteen were filed on April 18.

Whitaker remains in custody on a $1 million bond.
