LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior linebacker Will Smith became the second Red Raider taken in the 2014 NFL Draft when he was selected in the seventh round (238th overall pick) by the Dallas Cowboys. The New York Jets took junior tight end Jace Amaro in the second round on Friday night.
Smith, a native of Riverside, Calif., led the Red Raiders in tackles (120) his senior season and was a First-Team All Big 12 selection by the Associated Press. He is the first Red Raider drafted by the Dallas Cowboys since Brandon Williams in 2008.
His pro career began to take shape following a stellar performance in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl against No. 16 Arizona State. Smith compiled 14 tackles (10 solo) in the game, including two tackles for loss, and that led him being named the game's defensive MVP. He was also named to the ESPN Big 12 All-Bowl team.
Smith started all 26 games of his two-year Texas Tech career and registered 175 total tackles and 4.5 sacks.
Following the draft, two other Red Raiders came to terms as undrafted free agents. Senior defensive lineman Kerry Hyder will join teammate Jace Amaro with the New York Jets while senior linebacker Terrance Bullits will join the Baltimore Ravens. Senior wide receiver Eric Ward has signed with the Tennessee Titans.
