LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Lubbock family is in mourning after a Mother's Day tragedy took the life of a 10-month-old child.

10-month old Jason Wadley Junior was struck by 30-year-old Latoya Swanger as she was backing out of her driveway near 61st Street and Avenue R.

The child was rushed to UMC with life-threatening injuries and died several hours later.

Child care safety expert Karen Slay says cases like this are more common than most people think.

Safe Kids World Wide reports more than 9,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for injuries that occurred while they were unattended in or around motor vehicles.

During the summertime, since children will be outside playing more, Slay says to make sure they are informed that driveways are off-limits areas and are always accompanied when around a motor vehicle.

She recommends utilizing the rear cameras and back-up beepers on vehicles, but not to rely entirely on these devices.

Slay understands that Jason was probably too young to understand any rules, but encourages parents to have these discussions with their children.

"Do a complete walk around, not only looking for children, but also looking for things that would entice children to come into the area," she said. "If there's a bicycle nearby, or a toy they like nearby, they may be moving toward that. You don't see them moving toward it, and then another accident occurs."

Slay says these accidents can happen to anyone and extends her condolences to Jason's family.
