Food for Thought: 5/15

From a dine-in theater to America's drive-in, we've got a mixed menu in this week's Food for Thought.

KCBD NewsChannel 11'S Christy Hartin serves up this week's report.

We start with this week's two low performers.

Lone Star Oyster Bar at 5701 Slide had eight critical violations.

  • Beans and rice were not at least 135 degrees.
  • The steam table was not holding food at the correct temperature.
  • An employee did not wash their hands for at least 20 seconds.
  • An employee handled imitation crab with their bare hands.
  • An employee drank from an uncovered drink in the kitchen area.
  • Turkey, sausage and beans were held past their expiration.
  • The dishwasher was not sanitizing.

The inspector notes, due to the number and the nature of the violations - food safety knowledge was not observed.

Management tells us everything was immediately corrected.

Café J at 2605 19th also had eight critical violations.

  • Cooked potatoes were not cooling properly; this can cause bacteria to grow.
  • Shrimp, beef and turkey were above the safe cold temperature of 41 degrees.
  • Mashed potatoes were not at least 135 degrees.
  • An employee did not wash their hands before changing gloves.
  • There were open drinks in the kitchen.
  • Raw ground chorizo was stored above whole cuts of raw beef.
  • Grits were held past their expiration date.
  • The dishwasher was not sanitizing.

The report shows the violations were corrected during the inspection.
