CLAY COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

Two family members of an infant suffering from a case of the measles have now come down with the disease.

Earlier this week, Clay County officials said an infant who had recently traveled overseas had come down with the measles.

The Clay County Public Health Center said Friday that the mother and sibling of the infant have both come down with the measles. All three are receiving medical care and are at home.

"This disease can be easily transmitted from person to person in a closed environment," Gary E. Zaborace, director of public health, said in a statement. "It is not unexpected to see a cluster of measles occur within the same household."

The health department said the infant likely contracted the highly contagious disease while traveling overseas - a disease that, thanks to vaccines - was nearly eradicated in the United States until fairly recently.

Ten years ago, there were barely 40 cases in the U.S., but 2014 is already approaching 200 cases and could see 400 by year's end.

"We're urging families to check their immunization records and make sure they have both doses of the MMR vaccine," said Darrell Meinke with the Clay County Health Department.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that may not appear for up to three weeks after exposure.

You're considered immune to the measles if you've had the MMR vaccine - one vaccine at 12 to 15 months and the other at 4 to 6 years old - or if you were born before Jan. 1, 1957.

The infant was too young to be immunized. It wasn't immediately clear why the mother and older child had not been immunized.

The last case in the Kansas City area was in 2011 when six cases were reported in Johnson County. In Kansas City, the last case was in the 1990s. In Wyandotte County the last case was in 1992.

There have been a total of four measles cases in Missouri this year - three in Clay County and one in Grundy County. Last year Missouri only had three cases.

There have been no measles infections in Kansas since 2012.
