LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A Lubbock police officer is recovering after being attacked by a dog early Thursday morning.

Police say officers responded to multiple reports of a man assaulting a woman around 4 a.m. at the Garden Apartments at 1340 65th Drive.

They say the officers observed a male subject, William Fields, 19, pushing a female, Brandy Gibbs 23.

When officers separated Fields and Gibbs, police say Fields commanded his dog, a female Pit Bull, to attack one of the officers. The dog bit the officer on the back of the thigh while Fields started fighting with the officers in a attempt to gain possession of their weapons.

While officers were attempting to gain control over Fields, Gibbs intervened and tried to prevent officers from handcuffing Fields.

Fields and Gibbs were taken into custody after more officers arrived at the scene.

Police say a packet of synthetic marijuana was found in Fields' possession.

Both the officer and Fields were treated for minor injuries at UMC then released.

Fields is facing various charges including aggravated assault on an officer, assault on an officer, resisting arrest, and taking a weapon from an officer.

Gibbs is facing a charge of interference with a public servant.

The dog is being held by animal control.
