I was surprised and disappointed to see how Mayor Glen Robertson used his office to possibly remove LP&L board members recently, specifically members that disagreed with him about firing Director Gary Zheng. It is well known that the mayor wants him gone, yet, for whatever reason, the board had repeatedly voted not to fire him.
To be clear, I am not taking issue with the mayor wanting Zheng fired. He is entitled to his opinion. But I have a major problem with him threatening to remove private citizens appointed to the board that makes those decisions.
More than a decade ago, Lubbock citizens voted to save LP&L from financial ruin by creating a separate board to run the power company. and for the most part that system has served us well.
For the mayor to try and use his office to oust members of that board is a complete outrage. Why even have a board if the mayor can kick you off of it? That group was put there for a reason; to keep city hall out of their business.
It's also an interesting coincidence that council was set to discuss possibly removing LP&L board members last week, then that conversation quietly disappeared one day after Gary Zheng was put on paid leave. Again, maybe Dr. Zheng deserves to be fired, maybe not. I don't know, but the board is there to decide, not the mayor.
He will say he is doing his job and this is simply about knowing our "options," but I say it is abuse of power. If he wants to run LP&L, he should apply for the job just like Gary Zheng did. and he can answer to the same board.
