Dozens of volunteers donated their time and a bit of muscle on Saturday to keep their neighborhood clean and safe.
The Heart of Lubbock Neighborhood Association strapped on their gloves and got to work, loading up trucks of trash.
They combed through one square mile between Ave. Q and University, and 19th and 34th St., picking up items big and small.
Gene Bals, organizer of the event, said he was surprised at how much the volunteers picked up.
"We're just getting a lot more trash than we expected," Bals said, "and a lot more trash than trucks."
Although they gathered all kinds of items, they found more mattresses and sofas than anything else.
"We've found things like possums sleeping in them," Bals said. "We have homeless people that will sleep on those sofas in the alleyway."
And Bals said the cleanup is as much about keeping the streets safe as keeping them clean.
Half a dozen garbage truckloads were transported to the city dump.
