Lamesa veterinarian shares weird, wonderful stories in best-selling book

LAMESA, TX (KCBD) -

Bo Brock, a veterinarian in Lamesa, has accomplished a goal that he has had for years - writing a book - but he says he hardly even remembers doing it because it was over a span of many years.

The 380-page book is titled Crowded in the Middle of Nowhere, and even though it just released last month, it is already on the Amazon Best Seller list in humor.

It all began when he opened the Brock Veterinary Clinic in Lamesa in 1992.

He began writing vet articles for the Lamesa Press Reporter, but realized no one was reading them because they were "boring."

So he decided to spice them up by adding some humor into the stories. That got people talking.

Once he started making his articles funny, by sharing personal experiences, his stories took off.

A veterinarian magazine in Ohio began publishing his stories every month, and then he began sharing them on Facebook as well.

Before long, he was able to compile the articles into a book. He calls it a fun-loving look on a vet's life that will make you smile.

The artwork on the cover of Crowded in the Middle of Nowhere is the result of sitting in class at Texas A&M vet school for 36 hours a week, a rare bird doodle from Brock's notes that he puts on just about everything.

"It looks kind of third grader," he said, "because I drew it."

Brock is a better vet than a writer he says, but the book just came together. He says when things happen he has to write it down, or he'll forget.

"The editor, boy howdy," he said. "I can't spell and I have too many comma splices. Way too many comma splices."

Inside the pages of this book are stories from Brock's experiences as a vet. The tales - which span nearly 25 years - are about animals and people, some serious, some emotional, but most joyful.

"There's no politics, there's no problem in it, it's just living," he said. "It's a hard life. It's a lot of hours, you're up here a lot in the middle of the night taking care of stuff. But it's pretty rewarding."

Brock says just about everyone in his life is in the stories, such as his wife Kerri, who he married in 1987. She says while they were dating, Brock's grandma told her something she'll never forget.

"She put her arm around me and she said ‘I want to tell you something, honey'," she said. "She was like, ‘your life with him will never be boring', and she was not kidding."

Berenda Putman has been the secretary at Brock Veterinary Clinic for about 20 years now. She knows many of the things Brock has removed from animals and all the stories behind the Wall of Weird display at the clinic.

"You really don't believe those stories, but they do happen," she said. "Everyday."

It's a lifestyle that Brock's daughter, Abbi, has grown up around. She's about to attend vet school, wanting to follow in Brock's footsteps along with the many other interns you'll see at his clinic.

"We can grow the practice and we can become father and daughter veterinarians together," she said. "He really has been a huge influence."

Brock said the help he gets from his daughter and interns makes his job and life a lot easier.

"It makes it fun when you don't have to work all the time like I use to when I first came here," he said. "They kind of share the burden. We have fun, we laugh, they're fun people. Makes it easy to find happy."

Some of the horses Brock has worked on in the past have even won the Kentucky Derby. Anyone interested in reading more about his experiences can find copies of the book at Amazon.com.
