A traffic stop in south Lubbock on Wednesday night ended with a dog bite and two men facing charges.

Corporal John Gonzalez with the Department of Public Safety said a trooper stopped a vehicle at 114th St. and Quaker Ave. around 9 p.m. The trooper requested backup and Lubbock Police and Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputies responded.

Gonzalez said that while interviewing the driver of the vehicle, James Garza, the trooper found marijuana. Authorities said that's when Garza took off running.

A police dog chased the suspect down and bit him in the process. Garza, 29, was transported to UMC with minor injuries and is now being charged with drug possession, evading and resisting arrest and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Gonzalez said Matthew McWhorter was a passenger in Garza's vehicle, and is now being charged with drug possession.
