Lubbock children and their families got to spend a day out in the sun together, thanks to the efforts of a local organization.
100 Black Men of West Texas, with the assistance of the Texas Game Warden Association, set out to get kids and adults to break away from technology and spend some quality time together Sunday afternoon.
The 17th annual Kid's Fishing Derby brought hundreds of people together to Lubbock's Mae Simmons Park, which is exactly what Dwight McDonald, president of the organization, said he hoped would happen.
"It's a way to get kids and adults out to spend some time together," McDonald said, "away from the iPads, iPhones and all of that stuff. Kind of have a chance to visit with each other and commune with nature. There have been a ton of fish caught today. We stocked the lake with one thousand pounds of fish and folks had a very good day today. "
