I've long said that a venue for private performing arts should be funded privately.
At the very least, it will follow the theories of supply and demand. That's why I support the efforts of the Lubbock Entertainment Arts Association to bring the "Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences" to downtown Lubbock.
So far this group has secured more than half of the money from private donors to build what is sure to be a world class entertainment venue.
The group in charge of this project is well on their way to a 100 percent privately funded venue that will give visitors, residents and artists yet another reason to be proud to tour, live and perform in Lubbock, respectively.
And they are doing it the right way.
My observation over the years is that privately funded venues thrive. Much like the United Spirit Arena, it takes the vision of private individuals to see past the scale of the project and straight to the real benefit to the public.
My hope and expectation at this point is to see a shining example of private vs. public money. In this case, a facility that Buddy himself could say "I'm proud it bears my name."
