Severe flooding in Iowa in day 3 of bad weather in Midwest

ROCK VALLEY, IA (KSFY/CNN) – The same system that spawned tornadoes in Nebraska and South Dakota brought historic flooding to Iowa.

More than 100 homeowners in the community of Rock Valley, IA were forced out of their homes due to rising flood water.

Harm and Bonnie Wiersma have lived in their home for 26 years. They say seeing part of it ruined is heartbreaking.

"It's almost like a death in the family because it's your home. It's your safe haven," Harm Wiersma said. "And when it's filling with water and there's absolutely nothing you can do, I can't describe the feeling."

Their home is not a total loss. Although their basement is flooded, the water did not get to the main floor.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has issued a disaster declaration to free up resources for the clean-up.
