Hostage standoff ends; suspect in custody

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A hostage situation in the 1500 block of 45th Street is now over after a suspect fired at officers and held people hostage in a home there.

Police said the suspect was taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Lubbock police representative Sgt. Jason Lewis said it started with a Crime Line tip about a convenience store robbery on Thursday morning.

Police were told that the suspect would be in a home in the area. Sgt. Lewis said three police officers staked out the house in the 1600 block of 45th, and when the suspect arrived, he reportedly pulled out a gun and started firing at the officers, who were outside their vehicles at the time.

Sgt. Lewis said the officers took cover but did not fire back. That's when the suspect reportedly took off running down the street and kicked in the door of nearby home taking the people inside hostage.

SWAT, DPS, a K9 unit and Lubbock police worked to evacuate residents and identify witnesses who were taken to the Lubbock Police Department for questioning. Some residents were evacuated from their homes and moved to the parking lot of the Alexander Chapel Church of God & Christ.

Meanwhile, SWAT officers climbed on top of the house the suspect had invaded while a negotiator worked to talk the suspect out of the home. Around 8:30 p.m., the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Sgt. Lewis said police are working on filing charges and determining if there is a link between the robberies and the suspect whose name has not been released at this time.

We'll continue to update this story as we learn more.
