LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior left-handed pitcher Chris Sadberry has agreed to terms with the Miami Marlins and will report Monday to Jupiter, Fla., the site of the organization's spring training facilities.
Sadberry, a sixth-round draft pick, will most likely be headed to the Rookie New York-Penn League (Batavia Muckdogs) or the Class-A South Atlantic League (Greensboro Grasshoppers).
Sadberry was the only Red Raider to make a start each week of the season with 17 starts, ranking second in the Big 12. He went 5-3 with a 3.03 ERA in a team-leading 95.0 innings during his only season with the Red Raiders. Sadberry led Tech with 65 strikeouts while issuing only 25 walks.
An All-Big 12 second team selection, Sadberry is the first Red Raider starting pitcher to receive all-league honors since 2001 (Chris Phillips, Brandon Roberson) and is the first Red Raider to make 17 starts in a season since 2006 (Miles Morgan, 17).
He allowed two or fewer runs in 13-of-17 starts and threw at least seven innings on four occasions.
He tallied a 1-1 record in the NCAA Tournament with a 1.64 ERA in four outings (3 starts) with 22.0 innings pitched, 13 hits allowed, 18 strikeouts and six walks allowed while opponents batted just .186.
