Did you know a routine eye exam could help you find a potentially fatal illness, allowing you to treat it before it gets out of control? That's the message from eye doctors right now, since November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness month.
Dr. Mitchell says a normal eye looks like the top photo (shown right). But the bottom photo shows what doctors could see if the person has diabetes...blood vessels that are leaking...which is a serious problem that could lead to blindness if the disease is not controlled.
So, how long has it been since you got your eyes checked? No matter how good you feel, or how good your vision appears, Dr. Mitchell says you should get your eyes checked every 5 years under age 40, and then every 2 years after age 40.
