LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Incoming Texas Tech football recruit Nigel Bethel II has been kicked off of the football team after allegedly punching Lady Raider basketball player Amber Battle in the face during an altercation at Texas Tech's student recreation center during a pick-up basketball game.

Texas Tech police are calling it an "aggravated assault with hands, fists, feet." They say charges with the Lubbock County District Attorney are pending.

The Texas Tech football team has wasted no time dismissing Bethel from the team.

Blayne Beal with Texas Tech Athletics released this statement on Sunday:

"Nigel Bethel II, a Texas Tech football student-athlete, has been dismissed from the team due to his role in an incident at the Texas Tech Student Recreation Center on Saturday, June 28. Texas Tech Athletics has a zero tolerance policy on this type of behavior."

Battle, the Lady Raiders leading scorer and rebounder from a season ago, has reportedly suffered a broken bone in her face that will require surgery. No timetable has been set for how long this injury will keep her sidelined.

Battle is entering her senior season after being one of the Lady Raiders (6-24) lone bright spots last season. Battle averaged over 16 points and seven rebounds a game on her way to All-Big 12 2nd Team honors.

Bethel II was a 3-star cornerback recruit out of Booker T. Washington high school in Miami. Listed at 5'9", 173 pounds, Bethel II was regarded as one of Texas Tech's best recruits for the coming season because of quickness and cover ability. He originally committed to Miami before ultimately choosing the Red Raiders.

Outside of the statement released from Beal and Tech Athletics dismissing Bethel II from the team, no other Texas Tech official has commented on the matter including coaches Kliff Kingsbury and Candace Whitaker.

However, both Battle and Bethel II have commented via social media. Battle has tweeted asking for prayers while Bethel II tweeted "Trouble always seems to find me..." His tweet has since been deleted.

KCBD will continue its own investigating efforts and will provide further details once they become available.
