LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
This week's Pay It Forward started out at the intersection of Auburn and Boston in North Central Lubbock. We set up with our Pay It Forward sign seeking this week's playmaker.
Our playmaker arrived shortly after we hoisted the sign in the air. Marissa Hernandez spotted the sign first and Helen Olguin pulled into the parking lot. Marissa is Helen's daughter.
We asked Helen, "If you had $300, who would you choose?" Helen and Marissa knew exactly who to help.
Helen told us they wanted to help out a friend named Jerry Bass, who had been a blessing to her family.
"He's helped my uncle quite a bit." Helen told us. She added, "Since he's done something for my uncle to help me out, I think this is one way of being able to give back to him."
We took a short drive to Jerry's house. Helen and Marissa walked to the front door with us. We definitely caught Jerry off-guard. He was completely surprised.
Helen tearfully counted out $300 to Jerry. Jerry didn't know what he had done to deserve the money.
Jerry responded, "I try to help people as much as I can. Thank you very much."
We asked Helen how it felt to help Jerry out. Helen concluded, "He's been a great help toward my uncle. This makes me feel really good that I'm able to give back to him just as he was able to give back to me and my uncle. I'm so happy for it. I just wanted to cry."
Be looking for our Pay It Forward sign soon. You may become our next playmaker.
