Gabe Rivera, one of the all-time great defensive players to wear the Scarlet and Black, will be enshrined into the prestigious Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor on Sept. 13, when Texas Tech hosts former Southwest Conference foe Arkansas at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Rivera will become just the fourth member of the Ring of Honor, joining Texas Tech greats Donny Anderson, E.J. Holub and Dave Parks. The enshrinement ceremony will take place on the field at Jones AT&T Stadium during pre-game festivities leading up to kickoff against Arkansas.

“I never saw myself as a legend,” Rivera said. “This is an incredible honor for my family and we are all very excited and grateful to Texas Tech for this recognition.”

Rivera, a 2012 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, dominated the Southwest Conference during his four-year career that spanned from 1979-1982. One of the most feared defensive linemen in college football, Rivera compiled 321 career tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, 11 pass deflections and six fumble recoveries. He garnered consensus First-Team All-America honors his senior season in 1982 while also being named an Honorable-Mention All-American as a sophomore in 1980. In 1993, Rivera was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Honor and then to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

“Gabe Rivera has had a tremendous impact on our football program and his legacy at Texas Tech will be forever,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “Induction into the Ring of Honor is reserved for the best of the best and Gabe’s spectacular career at Texas Tech is worthy of our continued celebration.”

Following an appearance in the Blue-Gray All-Star game at the end of his senior season, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft. He and his wife now reside in San Antonio.

About The Texas Tech Football Ring Of Honor

The Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor was established in 2012 with the purpose of selecting an elite group of former players and coaches that made outstanding contributions to Red Raider Football. Candidates for the Ring of Honor are chosen and screened by an anonymous selection committee and once the committee has determined a suitable candidate(s) for induction, the group makes a formal recommendation to the director of athletics. The Ring of Honor is proudly displayed on the West Stadium Building (Press Box) at Jones AT&T Stadium so that the accomplishments of the inductees are celebrated year round.
