New connection in genes that cause Celiac disease in children

Researchers have identified genes that increase a child's risk for Celiac disease.

That's when the immune system reacts to gluten, so people with the illness try to avoid a certain wheat protein.

Past studies have indicated one of two genes might be to blame.

But now, a study of more than 6,000 newborns with either of two genes found 1/4 of the children who had both developed symptoms of celiac by age five.
