(WMC) - A mother, friend and neighbor was reportedly stabbed to death early Thursday morning in Dyersburg.

"I was just shocked how.  I said wow, why would this man do that?" asked friend Charles Tyus.

He cannot wrap his head around the horror that played out in this house in a neighborhood with well kept lawns.  Firefighters and police rescued his best friend, a 12-year-old, peering out his window after the investigators say his adoptive father, Willie Harris, stabbed his adoptive mother, Jocelyn Harris, to death early Thursday morning.

"I was really shocked because I didn't expect that to happen here for sure," said neighbor Jaime Hardin.

Police and firefighters thought they had been called to a hostage situation when the 22-year-old son ran out of the house and alerted neighbors.

Jocelyn drove a special education bus for an elementary school in Dyersburg.  Neighbors say they didn't notice any problems in the house.  Friends and neighbors say Jocelyn was a wonderful person.

"She was just very sweet.  She made me laugh all the time.  She was just really nice," said friend Whitley Wright.

The friends also said that Willie seemed to have intermittent mental problems, but they never thought it was that serious.

"He's mean, sometimes he's nice," said neighbors.

The Dyersburg neighborhood is now left wondering how something so awful could happen there.
