Naturalist Joe Ford of Owensboro has passed away

Posted: Updated:

One of the most well-known residents of Owensboro, longtime naturalist, 89-year-old Joe Ford has died.

If you grew up in Owensboro you knew of Joe Ford.

He had a passion for nature, anything from plants to snakes, and he loved to educate students about them all.

His family tells us he died around 12:30 Thursday afternoon after a long illness.

His family says he was the founder of what is now the Owensboro Museum of Science and History.

Back when he founded it he owned the exhibits and the snakes were his own. He even had an alligator named 'Albert.'

He then became very well known for speaking to classes, hoping to get students as interested in nature as he was.

Recently the city named a nature center after him.

There are even the Joe Ford Nature Trails that many people still enjoy today.

The family tells us visitation will be at Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro on Monday.

Funeral services will be held at Lewis Lane Baptist Church on Tuesday.
