Fireworks show goes on at Genworth despite rain risk

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A collective sigh of relief was breathed in Henrico, where the threat of severe weather had no impact on a major Fourth of July tradition.

Thousands of people gathered at Genworth Financial Thursday night, many with umbrellas in hand, knowing there was a chance the big event would take a hit. Luckily, at 5 p.m. event planners were able to make the call to keep the festivities, as planned.

"The big risk is lightening, not so much rain but lightening and if that was going to be a threat to us, we probably would have had to canceled," said Tom Topinka of Genworth.

Organizers tapped the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band to perform for the crowd. Had bad weather hit, there was no chance the show could be rescheduled. "Because there would be no band. They would be on to the next gig tomorrow," Topinka said.

Food truck vendors showed up early to set up shop. They too, were hoping for the best. As the event went on, the rain stayed away.

"This is Elsie. She was born in January. This is her first Fourth. So I was excited I had something to put her in that was patriotic," Heather Maciaer said.

Henrico police were on hand for crowd control, and organizers reported no problems at all. Everyone was just waiting for the big moment that brought them all here.

Genworth has been doing this firework celebration for nine years now. Usually some 6,000 to 7,000 people show up.

That number was down this year due to the storm risk.
