Texas school audit says tech purchases not needed

Posted: Updated:

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A North Texas school district audit has deemed more than $2.7 million worth of computer equipment and technology as unnecessary or unused.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/1jqaR39 ) the internal audit released in June found that some of the purchases sat idle during the seven-year period that was examined. The Fort Worth Independent School District also paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in maintenance fees for the unused equipment.

The school district's chief technology director tells the Star-Telegram he wants to stop paying the fees and hopes to recoup some of the money. He says the district's legal department will look into the purchases.

School board president Norman Robbins tells the Star-Telegram he had not seen the audit and that the board has not discussed it.
