Shiprock man facing 10-year prison term in assault

Posted: Updated:

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A Shiprock man has pleaded guilty to a federal assault charge on the Navajo Nation and could be facing up to a decade in prison.

Prosecutors say 21-year-old Thomas Navaho entered his plea Monday.

Navaho was arrested in March on a criminal complaint charging him with assault.

He subsequently was charged in a two-count indictment with assault resulting in serious bodily injury and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Navaho was accused of choking a sleeping man on Feb. 22 at a location within the reservation.

Authorities say sustained serious injuries that required medical attention.

Navaho has been in federal custody since his arrest and remains detained pending his sentencing hearing, which hasn't been scheduled yet.

Prosecutors say Navaho is facing up to 10 years in prison when he's sentenced.
