First Texas school marshals begin training

Posted: Updated:

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Seven Texas teachers and school administrators have started training to become the state's first school marshals.

The first class of marshals began training Monday in an 80-hour program at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth. They will receive firearms training and prepare for active-shooter scenarios during the nine-day program.

The state legislature created the new class of law enforcement last year. School districts and charter schools are allowed to place one armed marshal on campus for every 400 students. They will have the authority of a police officer and can make arrests.

The employees' names and school districts have not been released.
